HI Mal,

Humble apologies for the long delay in responding. It has been just a little frantic over the past month or two. Thanks so much for your detailed letter regarding waste management and my first and strongest response is that there is much in your letter which is factual and I agree with. I am very mindful of the fact that the system we have established does not reward excellence and waste minimisation and this is frustrating. However what is the overwhelming challenge is the need to have a system which generates the best result for the lowest common denominator.

I hope that what we are able to do is continually increase the standard of performance across the board and hopefully reduce the amount of waste generated and therefore the shared cost to everyone. What is clear is that we, as a community, pay more for "imports" due to freight cost and part of that cost is to pay for shipping in waste which we then have to pay to get rid of. Hopefully we will somehow find a better way of operating.

Please continue to prompt us and come up with ideas as not all the solutions reside within the minds of Council staff or elected members.
