Patricia Leeuwenburg studied the topic of roadkill on Kangaroo Island for her thesis with UniSA, with particular emphasis on tourism impacts and the possible adverse effects of roadkill on goanna and other species. The number of roadkill on Kangaroo Island reflects the juxtaposition of plentiful native animals with traffic (160,000 visitors per annum) and may be biologically insignificant for kangaroo and wallaby; nevertheless other species such as goanna & echidna may be adversely affected.
Dr Tim Leeuwenburg has an interest in emergency medicine and trauma. With around 1 in 5 country vehicle collisions involving wildlife, he is keen to encourage drivers to SLOW DOWN and ENJOY THE WILDLIFE, rather than risk a collision or worse still, to swerve and suffer a vehicle rollover.
Together they have published their first venture 'Road Kill Recipes', satirising the plethora of glossy cook books on the Australian market, yet emphasising serious conservation and road safety messages. |
